Biography

Christopher Olsen Sørum was about 1803 in Sørum parish, Akershus, Norway.[1] His father's name was Ole Christophersen Vølnebergskiet or Vølneberg Skole [2]

Christopher was a Gevaldiger, a military prison guard in the Akershus fortress. [1] He was a Gevaldiger at Akershus Prison when the notorious outlaw Gjest Baardsen was imprisoned there.[3]

On 11 Jun 1824 a "Christopher Olsen," 24 years old, born around 1800, married Laurine Frantsdatter at the Akershus fortress. [4]

Christopher married Anna Sophie Svendsdatter (1817-1881), on 12 Feb 1841, when he was 38 and she was 23 years old.[1]

Anne Sophie gave birth to their first child, Mathea Kristoffersdatter, in the Akershus Fæstningen (fortress prison), where the family probably lived, 13 Sep 1841. There were barracks for Gevaldiger there at the time. The sponsors in attendance to Mathea's baptism on 31 Oct 1841 were Guldbrand Andersen Skøyen, Gevaldiger (prison guard), Gunnerius Gulbrandsen, the son of Guldbrand Andersen Skøyen, and Marthe Olsdatter, who was Guldbrand's wife.[5].

On 27 Dec 1842 Anne Sophie gave birth to Søren Christophersen at Pipervigen, a neighborhood near the Akershus fortress. Søren was baptized 28 Jan 1843 and Gevaldiger Gulbrand Skøyen and his wife Marte, Peder Andersen and his wife Marie, of Pipervigen, stood as sponsors. [6]

Anne Sophie and Christopher (one assumes) were living in Hammarsborg, Oslo, when Anne Sophie gave birth to son, Olaves, on 11 May 1846. The Klokkerbok for the Garnisonsmenighet describes Olaves's father as "Gevaldiger Arbeidsmann Christoffer Olsen Sørum." When Olavus was baptized baptized on 18 Oct 1846 in the Garnisons Menighet (parish) his sponsors included Marthe Sköyen and her husband, Gevaldiger Gülbrand [Andersen] Sköyen, Ingebret Amundsen, and his father.[7][8]

Kristoffer's colleague Guldbrand Andersen Skøyen and his wife Marthe Olsdatter were sponsors at the baptisms of all three children.

When "Anne Sofie Olsen" died on 10 Sep 1881, "Christofer Olsen" was listed as the next of kin. [9] If this Anne Sofie was the same person, Anne Sophie Svendsdatter, who married Christopher Olsen in 1841, then we can conclude that Christofer Olsen was still living in 1881.

Research Notes

Christopher (also spelled Kristoffer and Christoffer) Olsen was an extremely common name in Sørum parish, Akershus, in the late 18th and entire 19th centuries. This makes it difficult to track him. All we know for sure is that the Kristoffer Olsen who married Anne Sophie Svendsdatter at the Akershus Fortress was the son of Ole Kristoffersen, another extremely common name. The following references may pertain to this person:

The 1801 Census recorded a Kristoffer Olsen, b. 1800, was living at Havskjolrud, in Sørum, Akershus, Norway, with his parents, Ole Kristoffersen, 31 years old, "bonde og Gaardbruger" (landowner and farmer) and Marie Madsdatter, 35 years old, and Marie's daughter Kari Tomasdatter, 4.[10]

The same 1801 Norway Census also recorded a "Christoffer Olsen," 7 (b. about 1794), living at Merlie in Sørum, Akershus, with his father "Ole Christoffersen," a widowed landowner and farmer, and siblings Hans Olsen, 17, Goro Olsdatter, 15, and Marthe Olsdatter, 13. [11]

In 1865 a "Christoffer Olsen," 64 years old, born about 1802 in Sørum, was living at Flaen, in Sørum, Akershus, as a recipient of Kristiana poor relief. The householders were Svend Andersen, 59. and his wife Maria Olsdatter, 55.[12]

In 1875 a "Kristofer Olsen," born in 1802 in Sørum parish, lived at Præstengen, in Sørum parish. He is described as "Forsørges helt af Xania Fattigvæsen," entirely supported by Xania poor relief."[13]
